Parents, Teachers, Staff and Friends Association (PTSFA)
We would like to invite you to become involved with our successful PTSFA, by sharing your ideas with the school and getting involved where you can. We always welcome new volunteers and value our existing members, who together achieve so much, with your support. We are in the process of arranging our Annual General Meeting - if you would like to attend and require any further information, please contact either Mrs Ryder, Mrs Magee, or Mrs Pugh to let them know that you would be interested, so that they can arrange a mutually convenient date.
Miss Hill
Sadly, as we said, Miss Hill will retire from school on 30th April, after having taught at Nicol Mere for 30 years. If you would like to make a contribution towards a retirement gift, please send it in a sealed envelope marked “Collection”. Thank you.
Free football coaching
If you have a child in the juniors and are interested in a 6-week coaching course on Saturdays, please ask for more details in the office.
Payment for school dinners
Children must bring money with them on the day they want a school dinner! There are a handful of pupils who regularly don’t have the money with them and it is causing a real administration headache. It creates queues in the dining room and a lot of unnecessary extra work for staff because parents are not giving the money to the children on the same day.
Rugby Tournament
The Year 5 and 6 pupils did very well in a Lancashire 7-a-side tag tournament in the middle of the holidays. Over 20 teams took place and our children reached the quarter final, losing closely to the eventual winners. This was particularly good as several children were off ill on the day or away on holiday so we ended up with just one sub.
Thanks to all the staff, parents and supporters who came along.
FMSIS Award
The school has been awarded the government’s new Financial Management standard. The school went through a rigorous 4 day assessment which confirmed that it is being run well, the finances are monitored carefully and that it provides value for money. We are one of the first schools to receive the standard in the country and we are grateful to all the governors who contributed to the work put in.
Ellie Wiseman Fund
Our Year 6 children have raised £40.00 for the Ellie Wiseman Fund, by holding a “name the Ted” sponsored game, led by
Caitlin McAleavy, Elizabeth Jones and Magenta Dean. Well done to them and thanks to Caitlin, Elizabeth and Magenta. Added to the Mufti money on 18/2/08, this makes a total of £135.20 . Further information will follow once Mrs Wiseman has been into school.

SIP School Improvement Plan
Future issues will cover cross curricular writing, Parental Partnership (supporting children and having a more effective home/school partnership), maths calculations, building a new office entrance and family room and Modern Foreign Languages. Please look out for a letter which will come out soon asking for your ideas or concerns (any area of school life eg homework, reading, lunches, standards).
School uniform
Following a request received from a parent, there is a possibility that we may use a second supplier for school uniform. The options would be ‘Slaters’, in Wigan, or ‘Sportsline’ in Ashton-in-Makerfield. We would appreciate your views on this especially as we have heard very mixed reviews about them all.
Clubs this term
As usual a range of clubs will run this term including choir, ECO, Y2 Adventure training, Y1 dance, Y4 dance, rugby, soccer etc
September 2008 classes
In September we envisage there being 4 Infant classes and 7 Junior classes, all being straight age groups - x2 Reception classes, Y1, Y2, Y3, x2 Y4, x2 Y5 and x2 Y6 ( Y6 split 3- ways for Core subjects ready for SATs). We have let you know this as soon as possible as promised. We will let you know which staff will teach which classes as soon as everyone is confirmed.
