 "An outstanding school"  OFSTED 2010

OFSTED VERDICT

OUTSTANDING!!

Well Done To Year 6

May we say a huge thank you to our Y6 children for their performance “Back to the Blitz”. This was an excellent display of their talents which was enjoyed by all.  We would like to wish them all the best and every success for the future as they leave for High School.

School Admissions – Intake

If you have a child due to start school in September 2010, please make sure you have applied for a place, even if you already have a child who attends this school, or the Early Years’ Unit.  If you have not yet done so, please contact Mrs Pugh on 01942 720871 for an application form and pack.

Strictly The Best Dancers!
Congratulations to our dance group who represented Wigan in the Gt Manchester Mini Games finishing 3rd in the competition.

Inter Schools Maths Challenge
This was a great success with twelve schools visiting us from across the borough. The competition was won by Nicol Mere. Fun was had by all. It was also nice hear other children compliment school on our facilities. we were all very proud.
More Sporting Success

Congratulations to our golf team who, like our dancers, represented Wigan in the Greater Manchester Mini Games and like the dancers they also finished third.

Cycling Proficiency

8 of our Y6 children have just passed their Level 2 cycling proficiency.  This was carried out on both school grounds and the local roads.  Well done to all those involved!!

We are very pleased so many pupils are using their bikes to travel to school.  However, please ensure a suitable bike helmet is used.  Also, please be aware that it is illegal to ride a bike on the pavement when pedestrians are around.

‘Let’s Sing’ at Robin Park

Years 3&4 attended Robin Park arena recently for a singing concert with lots of other local schools. The night was a huge success and the children were very well behaved.  Thank you to all who helped on the day.

VLN

We are in the process of introducing a new learning platform in school. Our school's portal (VLN) will eventually give you a personalised view of information and resources relevant to you and your child/ children, therefore helping to improve communication to and from the school.

We anticipate that it will be another two and a half years before it is fully functional. At the beginning it was being trialed by our two Year Five classes. We are now introducing it to Year Two, Year Three and Year Four.

OUTSTANDING!

Nicol Mere School is an outstanding school and one that is improving under the exceptionally good and inspirational leadership of the headteacher."

"The school’s motto – ‘Learning is a passport to life – enjoy’ – is seen in all that it does and helps pupils to gain an impressive understanding of their futures in the world of work. Overall, pupils make consistently good progress. By the end of Year 6 they achieve extremely well in their learning because the school has very high expectations of them. Staff strive to eradicate any differences in the achievement of groups of pupils. For example, the school has been highly successful in helping pupils with previously challenging behaviour to enjoy learning and make good progress again and those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities make exceptional progress."

This inspection places us in the top 6% of primary schools in the country! We are all extremely proud of our school's achievements!

Sports Days

Both the Infant and Junior Sports days

were great successes and a closely fought contest. The final scores were: Maple 630, Rowan 566, Oak 563 and Willow 561.

Video Conferencing Quiz

Four children from KS2 took part in Wigan’s TOP TEAM Video Conferencing Quiz.  After many exciting rounds they finished in the top three out of 120 primary schools. This is a fantastic result for our school! Well done children! This is also another part of our efforts to improve community cohesion.

Gymnastics

Our fantastic gymnasts did extremely well recently in a competition at Leigh Sports’ Village, coming fifth out of around 19 teams.  ‘Very well done’ to them and thank you to Mrs Johnston for her ‘coaching’ skills and to Mr Hunt who accompanied them on the day.

Holidays in term time

As explained last term, no holidays will be authorised during term time this year. The children already get over 14 weeks holiday and missing school does impact on their learning.

Car Park

In the interests of everyone’s safety, please do not drive onto or park on the staff car park during our busiest times.  Also, to avoid serious accidents, please do not walk through the car park - use the footpaths provided.  Thank you.
