Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year!

Welcome back and let’s hope 2009 can be even better than last year. We hope you had a great Christmas and you have all come back fully fit and raring to go.

Assistant Head Teacher

We would like to give a warm welcome to Miss E Gander, who has joined our list of dedicated teaching staff.

Punctuality & Attendance

I would like to remind parents that children need to be on the school site at 8.50am  ie not too late for going in at 8.55am or too early when there is no yard supervision.

We have a school target of 96% or higher attendance for pupils. I realise that children get ill and they shouldn’t come to school but I expect

to see them when they are reasonably fit to attend ie sniffs, slight colds or mild sore throats are OK in school. If I have concerns I will contact parents or inform the Education Welfare Officer if necessary.

Homework and reading

Please make sure that your child is bringing a book home from school to read each night and that homework is done and handed in on time.  If you have any questions relating to either of these topics please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Knives and Forks

It has come to our attention that there are a lot of children who cannot hold/use a knife and fork properly, even the juniors.  Could you please encourage your child to use knives and forks in the correct manner.

Parent governor forms

If anyone is interested in becoming a Parent Governor, please let us know as soon as possible and we will arrange for the correct form to be given to you.

Water Bottles

Please ensure that your child only brings in a drinking bottle with a sports top (not screw type), and it must be labelled with their name. Children are asked to take the bottle home to refill it each night. They will not be able to refill them at school unless the weather is particularly hot. This will cut down on a lot of disruption caused by water bottles in the past.

Fruit Scheme in the Infants

As last year, free fruit will be given to our Infant children.  If your child has any allergies to fruit, please let us know.

The school website

This is regularly updated and provides much useful information; please take a look – the address is

www.nicolmereschool.co.uk

Gifts

All the staff would like to say a big thank you” to all the children for their kind Christmas gifts.  They were very much appreciated.

Books for Schools

The Times and The Sunday Times have launched a great new Books for Schools promotion.  From Saturday 11th January throughout 2009 tokens will be available in both newspapers.  Please collect and send into school with your child for them to be passed on to the office!

School Nurse – Drop in session

The school nurse will be in school on Thursday 22nd January from 8.30am until 9.30am.  If you have any questions you want to ask please feel free to drop in and see her – even if your child is not ill.

Computer Games

Please note it is not healthy for children to spend excessive amounts of time on computer games.  However, Nintendo do have brain training and rapid recall games which do help with learning but again these are not to be played on for excessive amounts of time.

Medical Conditions / Data Collection

As always we are striving to keep our records up to date.  If your child has any medical conditions, please let us know as soon as possible.

Also if any home/mobile telephone numbers or any other contact details change, please let us know as soon as possible.

Talent show
There are over 20 junior acts taking part in the Talent show (6/2/08). If your child is taking part you can ask for two tickets. Spare tickets may be available nearer the time. Please see Mr. Gubbins or register for tickets at the office.

Playground and punctuality ( PUPILS COME IN BY 8.55am AND DOORS WILL BE CLOSED)
Please ensure that pupils do not arrive too early in school as there is no supervision. They are expected to arrive at 8.50am. Unfortunately there are still a small number of children who are regularly late and miss the classes going in at 8.55am. Register is at 9.00am. Once the door has been closed, children are to report to Reception.

Homework and reading
Please support your child by reading every night and completing homework on time. If you have any questions please see the class teacher.

Parking
Zigzags
Despite numerous reminders some parents are still parking on clearly marked ‘no parking zigzags’. This is obviously very dangerous and in fact one child was knocked down at a local school recently when a car parked inappropriately. Could the owner of the car registration P904 MBA and a few others please take note!

School Car Park
For the extreme safety of all our children, please do not use the staff car park as a pedestrian access. There are staff vehicles entering and leaving the car park at the start and end of the school day. Please ensure that children (and parents with young children) use the paths at either side of the car park to avoid serious accidents.

DISCO
As soon as the new Infant hall projection and sound system is fitted the PTSFA will run a disco for the pupils. Details to follow.

Wigan Athletic
If you are interested in a half-term club at one of the High schools (age 6-14) please call into the office for details.

Vouchers
Our school could benefit from free educational resources in the ASDA “Go Green for schools scheme”. Please collect your vouchers - we would be very grateful if you would pass them into school.

Welcome back
Happy New Year! Let’s hope 2008 can be even better than last year. We hope you had a great Christmas and you have all come back fully fit and raring to go. This is a particularly short term (5 weeks then 4½) so we need to get through a lot of work in a short period of time. Clubs and boosters will be up and running from next week so please look out for these.

Parking on zigzags
Despite numerous reminders some parents are still parking on clearly marked ‘no parking zigzags’. This is obviously very dangerous and in fact one child was knocked down at a local school recently when a car parked inappropriately. Could the owner of the silver golf: registration YP57 EAG and a few others please take note!

Playground improvements
Following requests from the pupils (through the school council) a range of improvements are being made. We hope you’ve made use of the two cover shelters which will give children sun and rain protection. Climbing walls are being fitted next week and we are due to fit trim trails in February.

DISCO
As soon as the new Infant hall projection and sound system is fitted the PTSFA will run a disco for the pupils. Details to follow.
