MUFTI
It is a FREE MUFTI day on Friday 18th July 2008.

‘Strawberry Teas’ for Breast Cancer
On Sports Days we sold strawberries and scones to raise money for Breast Cancer . We had a wonderful response and managed to raise £ 192.20. Thank you to everyone who supported this event and a cheque has been sent to the Breast Cancer charity. Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Magee for providing the refreshments and a thank you to Y6 and parents who helped Mrs. Magee.

Action Aid
We have managed to be able to support the education of 2 Indian children and have also been able to send a further cheque for £76.95.

Jabula
We have been able to send another cheque for £120.00 to Jabula. This amount was raised from collections at the Easter Show, Harvest Festival the Y6 performances and birthday money.

Feedback from recent questionnaires
1. Response was evenly split about pupils out on trips and visitors coming into school. We will be continuing with both as we have been.
2. Vast majority of parents and pupils like the idea of wearing their own clothes on their Birthday. We shall be implementing this from September. Therefore, children whose birthdays fall on 1st or 2nd September can come in their own clothes on the first day back.

100% Attendance
Congratulations to the following children who have achieved 100% attendance between 4/9/07 and 4/7/08. Well done!

DON’T FORGET WE FINISH AT 2.00pm TOMORROW, FRIDAY 18th JULY 2008.

Good Luck to all the Y6 children who are moving on to High School in September.

Hope you all have a safe and wonderful Summer holiday and see you all on
2nd September 2008.

Curriculum Newsletters
Please ensure that your child has received the curriculum newsletter for the Autumn Term, telling them what topics they will be covering. If you do not receive it by Thursday 17th please check with the current Class Teacher or Mrs Ryder.

Sport Shirts
Rugby shirts (blue or white) and football shirts (blue) should be cleaned and returned to school A.S.A.P.

Summer Fair
Over £1,300 raised - thank you to everyone involved - especially Mrs Magee, Mrs Pugh, Mr Fairhurst and Mr Fishwick.

Football and Rugby Teams
The football team drew 0 -0 in the final of the local Ashton Schools Tournament, having beaten the two favourites Platt Bridge and R L Hughes.
The Rugby team lost by 5 - 4 in the final of the Lancashire Schools Summer Tournament.

Teachers retiring and new Assistant Head Teacher
Just a reminder Mrs Starkie and Mrs Ryder are retiring, if you would like to make a donation please send it in a sealed envelope with your child via the normal money collections.
The new Assistant Head Teacher will be Miss Gander, who will be teaching Year 5. Unfortunately, she will not be able to start at Nicol Mere until after October half term, due to her current contract.

Provisional Dates

Reports to parents w/e 11 July.

Y6 Leavers shows 10 + 11 July Open to parents of Y6 pupils – see separate letter.

Y6 Leavers Party 17 July 5-7pm Beach party in playground – see separate letter.

End of term 2.00pm, yes 2.00pm, Friday 18 July!

Y6 reports will be delayed.
As you will have seen in the press, there has been a delay with the results being sent back to school. This will have a knock on effect on the reports being sent out to parents.

Feedback - uniform
The feedback received regarding the school logo was 1 "yes worth paying extra" and 1"no not worth paying".
We have had, in the past, a sample of the embroidered logo and due the layout of the logo, it tended to make the material 'pucker'. Due to this factor we have decided to continue with the printed logo.

Attendance
Only half the children in the school have met the required target of 96% and worryingly still, many parents feel it is still acceptable to take their children out of school during term time, despite already being off school for 14 weeks per year. The Governors will not authorise any holidays and in future, poor attendance due to non health related absence, could in certain circumstances lead to legal action and fines in court.

School Meals
Could all children in Year 6 who are having a school meal on the last day of term please ensure that they have enough money to pay for it, to avoid having to borrow money from school.

Infant dinner money will increase to £1.85 from September '08.
The 'Juniors' will continue to receive a 'cash cafeteria' service.

Free Meal Entitlement
According to a recent newspaper article, Government figures show that more than 1300 local school children eligible for 'Free School Meals' are missing out. If you are eligible for 'Free School Meals' make sure you take up the entitlement. If you need more information regarding the entitlement or a claim form, please ring Education Benefits Section on
01942 828609.

End of Term
Just a reminder - School closes at 2.00pm on Friday 18th July and re-opens on Tuesday 2nd September. Hope you all have a safe holiday.

School trips or visitors in school
Some parents have expressed different views about school trips and having visitors into school eg Roman Soldier, to enrich the curriculum. With the rising cost of fuel, trips out can range from £10 - £20 per child, whereas having visitors in school is a lot cheaper.

Please send your comments in an envelope to your child's teacher.

Birthdays
What do you think about being able to come to school in your own clothes if it is your Birthday (if your Birthday is in the holidays or at the weekend the nearest school day)?
Please send your comments in an envelope to your child's teacher.
