Rugby Team – Well done
Last Friday the school rugby team took part in a Wigan area rugby league tournament at Robin Park where they played brilliantly again. They won their league then won in the semis but lost 3:2 in the final having received a few injuries on the way which meant some players having to sit out.
“WELL DONE” to all of the team.

Junior Sports Day
Wednesday, 25th June 2008. Parents of our Junior children are very welcome to watch from 9.15am.
We will be holding 7 events in the competition.
Strawberry cakes will be available to purchase, with all proceeds going towards breast cancer awareness. Balloons will be released to raise funds at a cost of £1.00 per balloon.

School uniform – outcomes from pupil and parent surveys
The general consensus was to keep the uniform as it is. (A small handful asked for ties, but many more preferred not to). There was some desire to have embroidered logos, not stamped and a request to wear plain socks only, not patterned. All points will be considered carefully.

Discos
School discos will be held on Thursday, 26th June. The ‘Infant disco’ will be for Reception class, plus Years 1, 2 & 3. The ‘Junior disco’ will be for Years 4, 5 & 6. Infant parents wishing their children to attend are asked to bring them to the main Infant doors at 3.30pm and pay on the door - 50p per ticket - (this is a half-price trial!). Junior pupils should be returned after school at 4.30pm and pay on the door - 50p per ticket. Snacks will be available to buy at each disco.

Parents, Teachers, Staff and Friends Association (PTSFA)
Please look out for previously distributed letters re the Summer Fayre arrangements. If you would like to offer your help and be involved with arrangements (i.e. setting up beforehand, during the Fayre, and/or clearing up afterwards), please use the reply slip on the letters, or speak to Mrs Ryder, Mrs Magee, or Mrs Pugh.

ICT Film award
Well done to Y6, Miss Dann and all the teachers – the pupils won an ‘OSCAR’ for the ‘Best KS2 Animation’ award in Wigan for their Easter film. It was a term long ICT project which told the Easter Story.

Rugby Team – Well done
The team performed really well in the Northwest finals, winning two, drawing one and losing one. They ended up as runners up in their league. It was a culmination of over 2000 schools and the boys and girls performed brilliantly.

Talent show
We hope to run an in-house talent show for the junior pupils on the last day of term. Megan, Hannah and Alicia will organise the event again.

Junior Sports Day
Thank you to all the parents who attended the games. Thanks also to staff who organised the events (especially Mr Carrington, Mrs Quinn and Mrs Pilling). The strawberry teas raised over £100 for Breast Cancer Care.

Provisional Dates
Event Date / time Details:

Infant Sports Day 2 July 9.15am Further details to follow.

Summer Fair Friday 4 July 3.30-5pm See previously distributed letter.

Reports to parents w/e 11 July.

Y6 Leavers shows 10 + 11 July Open to parents of Y6 pupils – further details to follow.

Y6 Leavers Party 17 July 5-7pm Beach party in playground – further details to follow.

End of term 2.00pm yes 2.00pm Friday 18 July!!!

School uniform – outcomes from pupil and parent surveys
The results show that the vast majority are happy with current suppliers and systems. However, several people asked for embroidered clothing not printed. This would add an extra cost of 50p per item. What do you think?

Discos
The first trial discos were run last night. The sound system is fantastic. We are reviewing the organisation to see if this can be improved in some ways. We hope to have another before the end of term. Over £200 was raised for the PTSFA – in future we could do with more parental help. A big thanks to Mrs Magee, the DJ Miss Holian and all the governor and staff helpers, without whom the discos wouldn’t run.

Sport teams - rugby & football
Over the last week pupils have represented the school at two events. Firstly in football : the team played very well in a tournament only conceding one goal and drawing against the area champions. The rugby team played a few games up at Worsley Mesnes in preparation for next Saturday's big tournament in Ormskirk. They won all four games easily.

Attendance
The attendance trophy this week goes to Mrs Haselden’s class (Y4H) with 98.2% and Miss Norris’s Class (Y2N) with 99.6%.
Congratulations to each class!

Multi-cultural week
We are trying to raise the multi-cultural profile in the school so the children have a better understanding and appreciation of people from other countries and other cultures. A whole week’s events have been organised at the beginning of July. In class pupils will experience music, dance, food, art, history, stories etc. We have also booked several visitors including the media bus, African drums, the police and Byrchall High School to carry out some Jewish weddings!! We will be asking for some contributions to the companies which we have to pay for.

Classes
As per the newsletter last week and yesterday's letter, the children currently in Y2-Y4 will know by now which teacher they are having in September and why. As previously explained it is not practical to send out over 150 individual letters to parents. Before the end of term all pupils will have a ‘meet the new teacher’ morning to find out about next year.

 PTSFA Stalls
Thank you to everyone who helped at the mini stalls held in school last week and those who came to buy!
We will be selling books, cd’s, dvd’s, and toys to the children, during school hours next Wednesday (4/7/07). If you would like to give your child money to buy items, we suggest that £1.00 would be plenty for them to spend.

Dinner Money
Just a reminder that due to rising costs, the fixed price of a school meal will be £1.80 for Infants from September 2007. Juniors will continue to receive a cash cafeteria service. Please ensure that your child has enough money each day to buy dinner.

Owed Dinner Money
If your child has “borrowed” money from the kitchen and owes for their dinner, please return the outstanding amount as a matter of urgency before the holidays. Thank you.

Wednesday 11 July 7.00pm
Thanksgiving service for Governors, past and current staff, past and current parents and ex-pupils (over 18). Ticket priorities exist. If there are spare tickets available for this evening we will let you know by the middle of next week. If you are interested in coming please register with the office using the slip attached asap as spaces will allocated on a “first come, first served basis”.

Miss Hill
From next week, we welcome Miss Hill back to school after her illness. She will be returning for a few days a week. A big “thank you” to Miss Clarke who has been teaching Class 3H during Miss Hill’s absence.

Vision/Mission statement
Thank you to those of you who replied with your preferences for the school motto. Having received replies from all concerned, the winning motto will be : “Learning is a passport for life, enjoy”. Thanks for all the other great ideas – their spirit and meaning will be encompassed in our school ethos.

National Strategies
From September ’07 the New National Literacy and Numeracy strategies will be started at Nicol Mere. These have greater expectations of the children eg by the end of Year 4, children will be expected to know all their times and division tables, up to 100, for example 7x8, 72 ÷ 9 as quick mental recall. The home-school partnership is more vital than ever.

Attendance
The attendance trophy this week goes to Miss Norris's class (Y2N) with 99.1 and Mr Carrington's class (Y4C) with 98.6%. Congratulations to each class.

Holidays
From September 2007, holidays in term time will be unauthorised. We have an excessively high rate of pupils wanting holidays in term time. The impact is that these pupils are falling below the school’s target and national average, even before any absences due to illness. Furthermore, if children are not in school they cannot learn. Some schools are now fining families £100 per pupil per week for taking holidays in term – this is legal and shows how important the issue is.

30th Birthday Celebrations dates
As you will remember the school is 30 years old this year and we have a number of activities planned. Information will appear in the press and invitations will be given out nearer the time.

Friday 6 July at 7pm disco-dance at Stubshaw Cross Labour club for current parents, pupils, staff and governors.

Tuesday 10 July 2pm local community neighbours will be invited into school for afternoon tea and it will be an opportunity for the children to perform some highlights from their work this term.

Wednesday 11 July 7.00pm thanks giving service for Governors, past and current staff, past and current parents and ex-pupils (over 18). Ticket priorities exist.

Thursday 12 July 1.30pm +
30th Birthday Celebration Parties for current pupils will be held on Thursday afternoon.

Y6 Leavers Show, Y5 and Y3O/Choir
As part of the end of term shows and services some pupils will need to come back for the Thanksgiving service on Wednesday 11 July. We will give you more details nearer the time but envisage this will include
Y6 to perform part of their show, some Y5 pupils to
do readings, Y3O and the choir to perform a few
songs. Parents of these pupils will have ticket priority.

Y6 Leavers shows and parties
Year 6 parents and carers are invited into school on Monday 9 July for performances of the Year 6 play in the morning and afternoon. More details to follow. On Wednesday 11 July there will be a cinema trip and lunch and on Thursday 12 July there will be an evening bowling event!. Further information to follow to Year 6 children next week.

Uniform
Attached is an order form for school uniform. If you wish to order any items for the new term, please contact AC Sports direct.

September Staffing
We will be sorry to see Miss Gwilliam and Miss Norris leave us at the end of the Summer term. We offer them our thanks for their help, professionalism and dedication shown towards the school since they joined us and we wish them well. Overleaf is the proposed teaching structure for September 2007.
We hope to welcome Miss Hill back to school soon after her illness.

Classes
By Friday 6th July 2007, it will be explained to the children in the current Years 2, 3 and 4, which classes they will be going into from September 2007 and why. This is common practice in most schools and it is not possible to send out over 150 individual letters to parents. Before the end of term all pupils will have a ‘meet the new teacher’ morning to find out about next year.

Summer Fayre
As you know, the Summer Fayre was postponed last week, due to flooding. It is proving difficult to re-arrange a full Fayre as there are so many events planned before the start of the holidays. Thank you for all your donations for the stalls and offers of help. We will be holding stalls and tombolas after school at 3.30pm on Wednesday, 27th June in the Infant Hall : Toys/games, books/cd’s/dvd’s, groceries tombola, toiletries tombola, pebble stall etc. etc. You are very welcome to come along to see what we have on offer.

Parents’ Maths Course
Certificates were presented today to : A Molyneux, R Clift and S Bloor for completing the Family Learning Key Stage 1 Maths’ course at school. Congratulations to them all!

No Smoking Ban
From 1st July 2007, as you know, it will become a criminal offence for anyone to be found smoking on the school premises. It will not be acceptable to be found smoking on site and we would ask for your co-operation and support in preventing this. Thank you.

Y4 Roman Soldier
Year 4 had a wonderful day with the "Roman Soldier" on Wednesday. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and he brought history to life. Thank you to those parents for the contribution of £5.00. Without your contributions we would not be able to afford this and the children would miss out on enrichment.

Year 5 and Tony Blair
Y5S received a letter this week from 10 Downing Street in reply to their letters in which the children expressed their concerns about water pollution. They are delighted to know that their concerns have been recognised and they have learnt first hand how to act on their concerns. Please see the letter on the reverse.

Disney on Ice
There are a few Disney on Ice tickets still available – don’t miss out – if you would like tickets, please fill in the slip on the previously circulated letter and return it to school with your deposit. If you would like a copy of the letter, please contact school.

Summer Fayre
Unfortunately, due to flooding inside the building and on the playground today, the Summer Fayre has had to be postponed. We will let you know as soon as we have re-arranged a date.

Vision/Mission statement
There has been a very limited response so far! This will be your last chance to have a say in the Vision of the school. Following several meetings with the governors and the working party we would like to present you with the near final draft (below). Now is the opportunity to let us know which is your favourite ‘Motto’ (5 choices) and if you have any further comments generally.

Vision – 5 statements for parents and pupils to feedback on:-

1. Learning is a passport for life, enjoy.
2. The harder I try the more I will succeed.
3. We try, we learn, we succeed.
4. The day I try is the day I succeed.
5. If I try hard everyday, success will surely come my way.

Mission Statement
“Our mission is to create a safe, healthy, caring and happy environment where everybody is respected and valued. We aim to achieve excellence where everyone reaches their potential today and in the future.”

Values
Love, honesty, compassion, forgiveness, politeness, respect, determination and co-operation.

Attendance
The attendance trophy this week goes to Mrs Ryder’s class (FR) with 94.8 and Mrs Gwilliam’s class (Y5G) with 98.4%. Congratulations to each class.

Sports Days
Thank you to all parents and families that attended our Sports Days to support the children. What lovely weather we had! Thanks also to all the staff for organising the events and a big thank you to Mrs Magee for providing the children with drinks. The overwhelming response was very positive from parents and the pupils loved their games, races and activities. However, we did receive a suggestion on how to improve events and we will certainly bear this in mind next year. The aim is to always promote team work, model some of the games children play at school, promote fun and enjoyment of sport, keep the children on the go and include a realistic and healthy level of competition but not at the expense of damaging some pupils’ self esteem. We saw team relay and individual races, cricket, football, rounders, obstacle courses and fun games for younger pupils.

Sports
There is lots going on at the moment and there is a real buzz in school. We have had a lot of visitors in to support PE. For example, this week on Wednesday alone, Year 3 did football with Wigan Athletic, Year 4 had dance teachers from Byrchall High School and Year 5 were coached in cricket.

Bicycle Racks
We have installed bicycle racks at the entrance to the junior playground (near to the Kitchen). This is part of our healthy school initiative and ‘greener’ than cars. Could you please indicate on the slip below and return it to school if your child would like to come to school on his/her bike. As there are enough racks for 8 bikes only, preference will be given to the oldest children.

Year 4H Visit
Mrs Haselden’s class enjoyed a visit to Bryn
St. Peter’s Church on Tuesday this week to learn about church furniture and artefacts. Thank you to all the children for being so well behaved and also to the staff and helpers who went with them.

Year 4C Visit
Mr Carrington’s class took part in a Supervised Road Safety Walk with the Road Safety Officer along with the staff and helpers on Wednesday this week. The children learned about the very important issue of the dangers of the roadside. They were all well behaved. Thank you to everyone who helped.

Nut Free School
Nicol Mere has been a nut free school for a number of years now to protect the growing number of children with nut allergies. However we have had children with peanut butter sandwiches and snickers bars in school recently. Please support us by not sending in any food containing nuts.

Road Safety
There will be no “Lollipop” Patrol on Wigan Road, indefinitely, from Monday 11th June 2007. Please take extra care and use the Pelican Crossing safely.
