Mrs McGeown – please let us know if you wish to join asap.

Pupil questionnaire feedback about lunches

Thank you to all the pupils who returned their forms. To be fair the number of pupil responses was probably thirty times better than we have ever had from parents so well done children!

The vast majority of children really enjoy lunchtime especially the playleader system, the play equipment, organised games, big apparatus, dance stages and football cages.

The High School Musical was a great success but the boys want another day more sport orientated!

From the forms we received back, the changes they would like to be made are: a high visibility board for the lunch menu and to have more background

music playing in the dining room.

Big Sing 2008 – Guinness World Record Breaker

We have been invited to take part in ‘BIG SING 2008’.

We will sing live with all participating schools across the country in joining Des’ree singing the memorable hit ‘You gotta be’

When?  We will hook up live with The O2 in London on

November 27th 2008 at 2.45pm.

What?  We will sing the hit song “You gotta be” at the

same exact time as Des’ree is performing live in

The O2 Arena.

Why?    So that our school can be proud Guinness World

Record certificate holders.

Health Trainer Service

Start the step by step journey to a healthier you (and your child).  Leaflets available in school.  Ring 01942

481712 for further details.

Parking

Once again we have had strong complaints from neighbours regarding some parents who park across their drives, with a disregard for “no parking” requests.  This is causing distress and inconvenience to the people concerned and we would ask that all parents avoid parking across private driveways at all times.

Thank you for your assistance.

Coffee Morning

On Friday 12th December Donna Moore of Ashton Childrens Centre will be holding a coffee morning for any parents / carers. If you are interested please book a place with Mr Gubbins.

Come along and enjoy tea/coffee biscuits etc!

Harvest Collection

The Harvest Collection raised £70 which will go towards our Jabula Charity, along with contributions from the

birthday ‘cow’ (£35.00). Thank you very much!

Xmas Holidays

We will finish on Friday 19th December at 2pm!!!

We are holding two ‘Open Days’ for parents of children born between 1/9/04 and 31/8/05 who can visit school with their child and  spend some time in our Reception class.  Posters have been circulated and watch out for our advert in the newspapers!

PTSFA Discos Wednesday 12/11/08

Discos will be held in the infant hall at the times below :

Reception, Years 1, 2 & 3 : 3.30pm-4.15pm (staff will escort pupils into the disco at the end of school, parents must pick their child up at the end of the disco).

Years 4, 5 & 6 : 4.30pm-5.15pm. Y4-Y6 to enter at 4.30pm via the courtyard at the front of school.

Please note the back field gates will be locked.

It will be a free mufti in school that day.

Sports

The children have done well in recent sporting fixtures. Two teams represented the school in rugby. The Y6s won their league and the Y5s won half their matches (against older opposition). In football recent encounters have seen a mixture of draws and very near losses against the strongest sides in the area.

Dance stages

At last the children can celebrate the building of the new dance stages on the playground. They had asked for them through our very active school council. The search is now on for ‘Britain’s got Talent’ !!  Get on your dancing shoes. Thanks to the PTSFA for raising the funds.

Y5 Horses

Year 5 had a great day out at the Haydock Park Workshop on Tuesday, “chasing the tail around the trail”.  This develops their economic awareness and supports their life skills.

Judo Education

All children who have returned their slips have secured a place – sessions start on Monday 10/11/08 from 3.30pm-4.30pm.

School Council / ECO

Could anyone donate any bulbs which the School Council / ECO could plant in ready for spring?  If so please send them into school and we will pass them on.  Thank you.

Medical Conditions

We are a "nut free" school!

We have children in school who have serious allergies to any kind of nuts, therefore we ask that you do not send in anything containing peanuts, etc.  If your child is allergic to anything, or has a serious medical condition, please ensure that we have the details in the office and that if any changes occur during the school year, you inform the office immediately.  If you are unsure of anything concerning your child’s medical records, please speak to Mrs Pugh.

Appointments and Arrangements

If there are any changes in arrangements during the school day and you are picking up your child for an unavoidable reason eg medical appointments, etc., please let the office staff know beforehand, to avoid unnecessary delays.

Safety - Car Park

For safety reasons, please do not park or walk through the car park with your child at any time.  Please use the footpaths at all times.

 - Zig Zags

Following a recent ‘near miss’ on the safety crossing and a request from the Patrol Section, please be reminded not to park or drop off your child on the Zig Zag markings on the approach to the school crossing on Nicol Road.  This is very dangerous practice and, as this is a serious civil matter, registration numbers of offenders will be reported to the police.

Bike Helmets.

Please ensure your child is wearing a helmet if riding his/her bike to school.  This is a safety recommendation.

‘Walk to school’ week

Apologies that Xena Moran was omitted from the list of children who took part in the ‘walk to school’ week which was printed on a separate letter. “Well done”! to all those who took part.

Scholastic Book Fair

The book sale will be taking place in the Infant Hall on 13th, 14th, 17th & 18th November from 3.30pm-4.00pm.  Come along! all invited.

High School Musical

Thank you for supporting our dinner time and mufti theme.  All contributions from the mufti will go towards our new dance stages.

Open Day (Reception pupils September 2008)
Have you, or do you know, a child due to start school in September 2008? If so come along to our Open Day next Thursday, 15th November 2007 between 10.00am and 11.30am in the Infant building – see posters!

Breakfast and after school club
First Steps
Just a reminder that we offer “wrap around” care from 7.45am up to 6.00pm. For further details please ring 01942 711964.

Homework
By now you should have received the homework booklets setting out what your child needs to do and when. This is on top of nightly reading and learning times tables. Most pupils do very well at returning their homework on time, however, a small number do need to improve.

Reading
Please make sure that your child is bringing a book home from school to read. Please speak to their class teacher if not. Please let your child read to you every night and spend a few minutes discussing the text and its meaning.

Sponsored Read – Usbourne Books
Thank you to all the children who took part in the “sponsored read” last term. You managed to raise over £500 which helped the school to receive £800 worth of new books. Well done! Our thanks also to Mrs Stewart for organising the sponsored event.

Maths
My lesson observations over the last couple of weeks have flagged up that a high percentage of pupils are not confident in giving immediate responses with their x and division tables ( eg 3x4 = 12 or 7x8=56 or ¼ of 36 = 9 or 6 squared = 36 or the product of 9 and 5 = 45) . Practice at home really benefits children and we ask you for your help in this.

Sponsored times tables
Please look out for sponsor forms and letters next week. In the meantime, you might want to revise times tables with the children.

Holidays in term time
As explained last term, no holidays will be authorised during term time this year. The children already get over 14 weeks holiday and missing school does impact on their learning. Please find attached a list of the school working pattern for 2008/9 for your information.

Drop-In Sessions – Mrs Lidster
You are invited to come along to join Mrs Lidster, for a cup of tea and an informal chat on Thursday, 22/11/07, between 9.00am and 10.00am in the Infant Building to find out about what activities are available for families and children in Ashton and Bryn. Information will also be available about free training, volunteering opportunities, parenting and family support, childcare and Sure Start activities.

Parent Helpers
We appreciate the help of parents in school. If you want to help in school and wish to know more about it, please speak to Mrs Ryder, or contact her on the school number (01942 720871) to make an appointment.

School Photographs
The Photographer will be in school on Thursday, 15th November 2007 to take individual photographs of the children. Brothers and sisters/family members who are already at this school will be photographed together, unless you state otherwise. Unfortunately, we are not able to photograph siblings not at school.

Year 5 trip
Our Year 5 children are to “Chase the tail around the trail” at Haydock Park Racecourse on Monday, 12/11/07. We are sure they will have a wonderful time following the trail of a jockey and horse.

Children in Need
We will be holding a MUFTI day on Friday, 16th November 2007. All contributions of £1.00, or more, per family will go to “Children in Need”. Thank you for your support.

Collection of monies
Due to security reasons, we are not allowed to accept or hold money over the counter in Reception. Please ensure that any money for collections, school trips, toast and milk, etc is sent in a marked sealed envelope with your child into his/her class. Thank you.

Medical Forms

Parking
For the safety of our pupils, could some parents who drop their children off on Nicol Road please refrain from parking on the’ yellow zig-zags’ on the approach to the Road Safety Crossing. There have been a couple of incidents there recently. Thank you for your complete co-operation.

The children raised £193 last Friday when we held a ‘Mufti’ for Children in Need. Thank you for your contributions.
