3rd October 2008

Dear Parents,

Parent helpers

Two parents have very kindly offered to wash and sell second-hand uniform. Further details to follow!

Does anyone have any unwanted uniform or children’s size hangers?  Please send them into the office where they will be passed on.

MEN – Disney on Ice

We still have a few tickets left for Disney on Ice – if anyone is interested please contact the school for further details.

Car Park - safety

For safety reasons, could you please make sure that you use the footpaths into the school grounds.  Do not walk across the car park!!!

Welfare Assistant

We have a vacancy on our Welfare Department which has recently been advertised.  Please note the closing date for applications is Friday 10th October 2008.

Board Games

Could anyone donate any used board games which could be used for wet play times within school.   If so could you please bring them into the office A.S.A.P. – Thank you!

Pierced ears

Just a reminder that any earrings must be studs only and pupils must take them out for PE. Furthermore, pupils should have any piercing done at the start of the summer holidays to ensure they have healed up by September.

Hair

Girls need to have their hair sensibly tied back for health and safety reasons, at all times.

Playground and Punctuality

Please ensure that pupils do not arrive too early in school as there is no supervision by teachers until 8.50am. They are expected to arrive at 8.50am (Mr Gubbins will often be around most mornings earlier than this, but this cannot be guaranteed and relied upon as child supervision!)  All children go into class at 8.55am and registers are taken at 9.00am. If children are not in by 8.55am the doors will be closed.  Unfortunately there are still a small number of children who are regularly late and miss the classes going in at 8.55am. If the door has been closed please ensure you take your child to the main office for signing in – they are not to knock on class windows as this disrupts the whole class.

Bicycle Helmets

Please ensure that your child wears a helmet when riding a bike to school – this is not optional! Pupils must not ride them on the grounds and should push them by hand for safety of all.

Reading Books

Please make sure that your child is bringing a book home from school to read.  Please speak to their class teacher if not.

Workshops update

Workshops for parents will be run all year on a range of learning areas. These will support you helping your children at home and in understanding what and how things are taught at school today. The first two workshops ran this week and unfortunately the attendance was rather poor.  The last 2, for now, are listed below and numbers are limited. If demand is great we will run workshops again.

1.        Y2-Y5 Science/ICT  9.10am 1 hour  Wednesday 8/10/08 Mr. Gubbins in ICT suite.

2.       Y3-Y5 Thinking skills with lots of games etc 5.30pm-7pm Thursday 16/10/08 Miss Gander (parent and child to attend max 20 1st come 1st served basis) in Infant hall.

(see separate letter from Miss Gander)

Please complete the tear-off slip below

Turnpike Gallery

The Turnpike Gallery in Leigh is running workshops in the autumn half term break, for all key stages.

For more details, please contact Louise Clennell, Gallery Co-ordinator or Martin Lucas, Visual Arts Officer on 01942 404469 or e-mail turnpikegallery@wict.org

As these workshops are highly popular, advance booking is recommended.

Y3/Y4 Harvest Assembly

This will take place on Friday 24th October at 9.30am.  More details to follow.

October 2007

MUFTI
Friday 26th October will be a Mufti day – as we are raising the profile of physical activity amongst the children they have asked for a ‘famous sporting character’ theme (so children can come to school dressed as a sports star that day – preferably not swimming in this weather!). Voluntary donations of £1 per family would be gratefully received and donations will support the drama productions for the children.

Low Bank Ground
Reminder – the meeting is 6pm Tuesday 23rd October in the Infant hall.

National Healthy School Status (NHSS)
We have been nominated for the NHSS and will be inspected after ½ term – please support us in being a healthy school especially with lunch boxes (a meeting is being arranged to give you ideas of healthy contents for lunch boxes).

School Council
As we are going for NHSS all the children in school have decided that after ½ term there will be no sweets in school. In the past it was common practice for sweets to be brought in for birthdays. This will be replaced by a donation ( if parents wish) to one of our two charities – Action Aid and the Jabula Project, both sponsor the education of children in India and South Africa.

Parents Evening
By now you will have received (and hopefully returned) the parents evening slip for next Wednesday or Thursday. Please take this opportunity to meet the teacher and see how well your child has settled, how they are progressing and how we can work together to support them further.

Parent questionnaires – Thankyou for the responses so far ( we have received a handful of return slips but would like to have more)
The only common issue is parents asking for more contact with staff ( however Ofsted said our provision was excellent and please note the information below).

What courses do you want ?
We had a very small response for the one hour maths ‘helping your child with maths – how we teach maths today’ meeting/course run last week. Please let us know what you would like and when.
Meetings / courses I would like and when -

MP visits school
On Tuesday the Rt Hon Ian McCartney MP visited school to meet the Year 6 pupils and the school council. He had bought a lovely False Acacia tree for us after hearing how the children wanted more shade outside.
It was planted behind the soccer cages during a small ceremony and our thanks go to him for the contribution. We are also grateful for the excellent ongoing work by the school council and for Mr. Smith and Mr. Fishwick's efforts in planting the tree.

Medicines in school
We are presently updating our medical records kept in school for each child - please look out for separate letters coming out next week.

Attendance
Once again this year we will be awarding certificates for 100% attendance each term. Following suggestions from some parents we will be introducing a prize at the end of the year for children with 100% attendance.

Sickness absences
If your child is off school ill, please phone us ASAP on the first morning they are off.

Picking up other children
If a friend's child has not been picked up at the end of the day please do not take them home without school and the parent's permission as this causes a lot of confusion (even though it is done with the best of intentions).

Stranger Danger
Please be aware that there have recently been several incidents near other schools involving strangers approaching children!

 Holidays in term time
As explained last term, no holidays will be authorised during term time this year. The children already get over 14 weeks holiday and missing school does impact on their learning.

Uniform - jewellery & missing kit
Please ensure that your child does not wear jewellery except an earring stud which has to come out for PE and/or swimming.
Has anyone found a new Liverpool PE bag which has gone missing? If it has been picked up by mistake could you please return it ASAP thanks.

Free Meals
If your child is entitled to Free Meals, don’t miss out. Make sure they take up the entitlement. If they would like a sandwich box, instead of a hot meal, please contact school to arrange this with Mrs Magee.

Maths parents course
Maths
My lesson observations over the last couple of weeks have flagged up that a high percentage of pupils are not confident in giving immediate responses with their x and division tables ( eg 3x4 = 12 or 7x8=56 or ¼ of 36 = 9 or 6 squared = 36 or the product of 9 and 5 = 45) . Practice at home really benefits children and we ask you for your help in this.
